Vicarious Trauma & Processing Through EMDR
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Restructuring (EMDR) is an effective approach to psychotherapy that accelerates the treatment of a wide range of mental health issues including past traumatic events and present life conditions. Some of the studies show that 84%-90% of single-trauma victims no longer have post-traumatic stress disorder after only three 90-minute sessions. EMDR is one of the only two therapies recommended for PTSD by the World Health Organisation. I provide both Individual and Group EMDR Therapy. EMDR Group Therapy
The goal of group EMDR is to use a group framework to process a trauma episode to reduce traumatic stress, strengthen resilience and prevent post-trauma complications. The group EMDR model allows participants to reprocess their trauma alongside other trauma survivors. Group EMDR is a method by which a group of strangers can heal from trauma collectively, without the need to share their traumas. The trauma events are not shared with other group participants, and each participant engages in their own trauma processing in a confidential and safe environment. Group EMDR has been successfully used in New Zealand with ACC Sensitive Claims clients, Cyclone Gabrielle and people affected by the Christchurch Mosques attacks.

Vicarious Trauma
Vicarious trauma can lead to disruptions in cognitive schemas, emotional regulation, somatic functioning, and worldview, even without direct exposure to traumatic events. It is especially common in therapists, social workers, and others in the helping professions (Figley, 2002) especially therapists working with clients with trauma.
Why EMDR for Vicarious Trauma?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is well-supported for not only for treating PTSD but also for secondary traumatic stress (Shapiro, 2018). Emerging research supports its use for Vicarious trauma, helping clinicians reprocess distressing material absorbed from clients and restore internal safety. EMDR enables the brain to 'digest' unprocessed vicarious trauma, reducing emotional distress and restoring healthy belief systems (Shapiro, 2018).
Group Structure & Format
Our Clinician Group EMDR Program is an innovative treatment designed specifically for therapists. In this program participants engage in structured EMDR processing phases. Through bilateral stimulation techniques, such as butterfly taps and eye movements, and elements of art therapy, participants experience deeper emotional processing.
